Church Takes Stand Against Violation Of Nation's Laws
By a 40 to 30 vote members of Barnstable Unitarian Church last Friday night formally adopted a resolution not to condone violation of any "law of of the land" and to repudiate "any statements, motions or votes" made in assemblies of the Unitarian Universalist Association.
The vote came after more than two hours of heated debate during which there were many sharp exchanges among the parishioners, several of whom stomped out on the meeting.
It was the last article of the three-article meeting warrant which touched off the long discussion. It was introduced by David Owen and brought forth strong vocal support from Nelson Stone, Ralph Howard, John R. Handy and Mr. Owen as well as many other parishioners. Mr. Handy on several occasions pleaded for calm, order and courtesy In an attempt to keep the discussion in line.
Among those opposing the resolution were pastor of the church, Rev. Kenneth R. Warren; chairman of the Prudential Committee, Louis J. Jacobuccl and Clifford Bragdon, Smith College English professor. They concurred on the premise that "your conscience should be the last word in this issue."
Specifically, the re s o 1 u t i o n stated, "Be it resolved that this congregation of the Barnstable Unitarian Church does not approve or condone any violation of any law of the land for any reason whatsoever. In demonstration of our accord with this principle, we repudiate any statements motions or votes made in assemblies of the Unitarian Universalist Association, or in other related bodies that deny or weaken this statement of belief.
The resolution, in effect, countermanded the five point resolution adopted this summer at Cleveland by the Unitarian Universalist Association general assembly. ' This resolution sanctioned all forms of non-violent resistance to the machinery of war. It said, in part, "We recognize and respect the religious conviction that impels all forms of non-violent resistance whether by destruction or return of draft cards, or refusal of induction. . . "
Other parts of the resolution called for abolition of the House Committee on un-American acticities and reform of the selective service system.
Members of the New Bedford Unitarian Church early this month over whelmingly opposed the "sanctuary" provision adopted at the national assembly in Cleveland.
At Friday night's meeting Barnstable Unitarians voted to rescind a $4100 appropriation approved at the annual meeting on April for major repairs to the church organ. Also voted was authorization of a committee of five to study the church"s by-laws and constitution and make recommendations for changes and improvements.

"So, look. Miss Andrews."
"Yes."
"You understand this is a very serious charge to bring against anyone."
"Yes."
"Let alone your own brother."
"Yes."
"It never happened."
"Well, actually, it kind of totally did."
"You are deluded."
"Well, that may be, but I would submit that my mental health history is a result of having stuff like that done to me in the first place."
"You lie."
"I don't, actually. In fact, this is the first...
Dreamstory, Chapter One: What Happens At The End
By Velveteen Andrews
"What?!"
"I didn't say anything."
"How can you say such a thing?"
"I'm not going through this again."
"What do you mean?"
"All this -- denial. I'm done. I'm just going to say exactly what happened as I remember it."
"It never happened!"
"The reason I know it happened is that I renember it. I was eight years old. My brother was twelve years old. I was able to recover the date because I remember at some point in the week preceding the event, our father for some reason had told us, I'm going to be speaking at the Unitarian Church this Sunday at 11:00. It did not seem weird to me at the time, because he was always out of the house anyway. Plus all he used to when he was home was harangue me, so good."
"You lie."
"In fact, I remember thinking, it made sense that he would get something going on Sundays, because that was the only time he was ever even around anymore. Weekdays he was working, of course, and weeknights he was always at one of his many, many important community ...
